Play More Attention

CAROL
There was a moment I realized that I could love Skyler forever. I saw a thing online and it had a picture of an elderly couple holding hands. The caption read something to the effect of: This couple has been married for almost 60 years. When asked how they did it, they said, “We grew up in a time where when something was broken, we fixed it.”

SKYLER
Today, something breaks and it takes a second to click, and one day to get a brand new version delivered.

CAROL
Skyler is someone who takes time to fix things. He doesn’t get impatient like I do.

SKYLER
Fixing is just fiddling. Fixing is just playing.

CAROL
We don’t play enough.

SKYLER
Things get in the way.

CAROL
We stop playing. We stop fixing.

SKYLER
The less we play, the more afraid we are.

CAROL
The more afraid we are to try things at all. We get scared we’ll break them.

SKYLER
Or that we won’t be good enough.

CAROL
Or that we’ll look stupid.

SKYLER hands CAROL a deck of cards.

SKYLER
Just try it.

CAROL
No.

SKYLER
Come on.

CAROL
You’re the magician, not me.

SKYLER
Just try?

CAROL
Fine!

CAROL grabs the cards.
SKYLER springs the cards.
CAROL starts to play with cards.

SKYLER
Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” I think the same is true for magic. We all know magic. We all know wonder. And it’s all around us, still. It never went anywhere.

CAROL does the 4 stacks card trick.

CAROL
It’s okay if we forget about the magic. We just need to play a little to get reminded of it again.

SKYLER
It’s right here, right in front of you.

CAROL
Come on, we’ve saved a spot in line, just for you.

SKYLER
We’re waiting to have fun.

CAROL
The boss is out.

SKYLER
It’s Friday night.

CAROL
Your mom is running an errand.

SKYLER
So is your dad.

CAROL
There aren’t any grownups to tell you that you need to work on something else.

SKYLER
Or take things seriously.

CAROL
Or get mad at you for eating candy all morning.

SKYLER
Or tell you not to make a mess.

CAROL
None of that is here.

SKYLER
Come on, we’ve saved a spot in line, just for you.

CAROL
We’re going to let you cut.

SKYLER
Come play.

CAROL
The second you do–the moment you stop analyzing, or second guessing, or getting scared, the magic will come back. You will see the wonder that’s always been there.
