CAROL
In 2016, I was living in New York and Skyler was living in San Diego, and he was calling me his girlfriend for the first time since we were freshmen in high school. We flew back and forth across the country to be with one another, and every single moment felt miraculous since we didn’t have much time that was together, in person. We met when I was 13 and he was 14, and we’d talk about the decade that we lost in between the first time we kissed and when we reconnected as adults. One day, we started wondering about other lost time: the time we did not know one another at all.

SKYLER
How old were you when you learned how to ride a bike?

CAROL
8. My uncle taught me. Did you ever make mud pies?

SKYLER
In kindergarten.

CAROL
I loved Bop-It when I was in middle school.

SKYLER
Did you ever watch Figure It Out on Nickelodeon?

CAROL
Yes. This is a long shot, but did you listen to Britney Spears?

SKYLER
I really liked swings.

CAROL
Me too.

SKYLER
I’d run to them in kindergarten.

CAROL
I’d swing super high, point my toes and kick my legs forward and feel the air in my face when I got to the top, so high that I thought I’d swing all the way over the top like the upside down loop on a roller coaster.

SKYLER
I liked playing with miniature things.

CAROL
Me too! I had a Polly Pocket and I’d play with her all the time.

SKYLER
I had a Mighty Max.

CAROL
You did?

A slight pause. A loving gaze.

SKYLER
I wish I was playing Mighty Max next to you playing Polly Pocket.
